BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals were the only Branch County baseball team to win an MHSAA District championship Saturday, doing so in front of their home fans at Lowe Field.
Division 2 District at Coldwater
In the Division 2 Coldwater District, the host Cardinals shut out Harper Creek 2-0 in the semifinals and edged Marshall 9-8 in the Final to claim the program’s first District trophy since 2023. The Redhawks advanced by beating Pennfield 17-3 in six innings.
Owen Tappenden earned the victory against Harper Creek, allowing three hits, walking four, and striking out eight over 6-1/3 innings. Dayton Ennis picked up the save with 2/3 of an inning of no-hit ball with a strikeout. Logan Turner was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Rylan Edwards and Caiden Searing drove in the Coldwater runs.

The Cardinals found themselves in a 5-2 hole against Marshall through the first inning. They clawed their way back with a run in the third, three runs in the fifth to regain the lead, and an insurance run in the sixth. The Redhawks retook the lead with three runs in their half of the sixth. Coldwater scored twice in the seventh, then blanked Marshall in the bottom of the frame to preserve the win.
Ennis was 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and an RBI, Royale Fleming was also 2-for-4 and drove in a run, Edwards went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Finn Hanson had two RBIs while going 1-for-3. Ennis was also the winning pitcher.

Coldwater improves to 19-16 with the win and will host Otsego Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Lowe Field for a Division 2 Regional Semifinal. Coverage on WTVB will begin Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
Division 3 District at Centreville
Union City dropped a 5-3 decision at Centreville in the Semifinals of the Division 3 District hosted by the Bulldogs.
Centreville scored all their runs in the fourth inning. Nolan Chard and Tucker Zweng each went 2-for-4, while Mitchell Graham had the Chargers’ only RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
Union City concluded its season with a 22-11 overall record. Centreville would go on to win the District title by beating Constantine 7-3.
Division 3 District at Hanover-Horton
Jonesville shut out Quincy 1-0 in the Semifinals of the Division 3 Hanover-Horton District.
The Comets scratched out a run in their half of the fifth as pitcher Marshall Baker held the Orioles to just four hits: singles from Joe Gray, JJ Wright, Bryson Estlow, and Seth VanStelle.
Quincy wrapped up its season with a 14-13-2 record. Jonesville defeated Hanover-Horton 8-3 in the District Final and will play at Centreville Wednesday in a Division 3 Regional Semifinal.
