INDIANAPOLIS IN, WTVB) – Indiana Governor Mike Braun has officially extended the state’s gas tax holiday, keeping both the 7% Gasoline Usage Tax and the Gasoline Excise Tax suspended through July 7.
Originally scheduled to expire June 7, the continued tax freeze saves Hoosier motorists more than 62 cents per gallon at the pump.
Driven by an energy emergency declaration originally issued in April following global market instability, the dual tax suspension has successfully pushed Indiana’s regular fuel prices down to a statewide average of $3.55 per gallon, granting the state the lowest average gas prices in the nation, according to AAA.
As of this morning a number of towns along the Indiana-Michigan border, including Angola, have seen pump prices fall under $3.30 per gallon, making for some of the cheapest current gas prices in the nation.
The extension is executed under a specific state energy emergency statute that grants the governor unilateral authority to sustain relief measures for up to 120 days without legislative approval.
