STEVENSVILLE, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal baseball team brought back from Stevensville Lakeshore the program’s first MHSAA Division 2 Regional trophy in thirteen years. Their run in the state tournament ended Saturday in the Quarterfinal round.
Division 2 Regional Final #12: Coldwater 7, Wayland 2
Owen Tappenden led the Cardinals to a 7-2 win against Wayland in the second Division 2 Regional Final game at Lakeshore. He set the tone offensively with a two-run homer in the first inning, his 18th of the season, and finished 2-for-3 with a double. He was also the winning pitcher, giving up both Wildcat runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Rylan Edwards was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Finn Hanson hit an RBI double, and Dayton Ennis tripled. Ennis also earned his fourth save of the season.
The first Regional Final saw Vicksburg shut out Grand Rapids Christian 3-0.
Division 2 Quarterfinal #6: Vicksburg 12, Coldwater 1
In the Division 2 Quarterfinal, Vicksburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated Coldwater 12-1.
The Bulldogs held the Cardinals to five hits. Royale Fleming’s RBI double in the sixth drove in their only run of the game. Ennis also doubled, Rylan Edwards went 2-for-3, and Tappenden singled.
Coldwater wrapped up the season with a 21-17 record. Vicksburg will face Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills Thursday at 9 a.m. in the first Division 2 Semifinal at MSU’s McLane Stadium.
