JONESVILLE, MI (WTVB) – Jonesville is pursuing $3 million in state funding to transform the long-vacant former Klein Tool manufacturing plant into a multi-use commercial and residential hub.
City officials, working alongside local developer DH Roberts Construction, have been invited to apply for two $1 million brownfield grants and an additional $1 million low-interest loan through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
If secured, the funding will be routed through the municipality to offset cleanup and construction costs for the site, which has been under city control and sitting dormant for several years.
The downtown revitalization project is anticipated to catalyze roughly $20 million in private investment.
According to current blueprints, the back two-thirds of the industrial building will be demolished to make way for modern market-rate apartments, while the remaining historic brick structure will be renovated into storefront retail and restaurant spaces.
Jonesville City Manager Jeff Gray says that local officials are close to locking down the state financial package and expect an agreement to be finalized soon , with anticipated demolition beginning this winter. .
