LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, that the state’s total number of reported cyclosporiasis cases has climbed to 10,077.
That number continues solidify Michigan as the epicenter of a massive, multi-state outbreak of the foodborne parasitic illness, which usually averages only about 50 cases in the state annually.
A single-day jump of 397 new cases pushed the tally past the 10,000 mark, with the severe gastrointestinal disease now spreading across 70 of Michigan’s 82 counties.
Health officials report that 160 people have been hospitalized due to the severe, watery diarrhea and fatigue caused by the cyclospora parasite, though fortunately, no deaths have been linked to the outbreak.
