UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The village of Union City, has successfully reached its $100,000 local fundraising goal to secure a matching state grant for the development of its new “Union City Cornerstones Walking Tour.”
Funded through a Patronicity crowdfunding campaign backed by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Michigan Municipal League, the initiative has officially unlocked a $100,000 matching grant to fully fund the heritage-tourism project.
The upcoming historical trail will feature QR codes, interpretive signage, and sculptures across seven significant local sites, including four prominent Underground Railroad locations.
A new historical mural has also been completed on the side of Kodet’s Hardware building just off Broadway Street.
Funded separately by an anonymous donation, the nostalgic 1950s postcard-style mural was brought to life by local art teacher Bobbie Watson Mathis and muralist Stephanie Burdick.
The public artwork depicts iconic local landmarks, including the Riley Dam, the historic Peerless Portland Cement Company, and a Native American trail-marker tree honoring the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi.
According to organizers, the art piece serves as a gateway to spark curiosity and encourage residents and visitors alike to rediscover Union City’s deep-rooted history.
