LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Republican gubernatorial nominee John James selected State Representative Jay DeBoyer as his running mate and choice for lieutenant governor on Thursday morning.
The announcement, made on the social media platform X, marks James’ first major staff decision since winning the Republican primary on August 4. James praised DeBoyer, a two-term lawmaker from Macomb County, citing his background in small business, local government, and legislative oversight.
In an X post James wrote “He knows how to work with both parties in the Legislature to get things done, he will lead the fight against corruption, fraud, waste, and abuse.”
The 56-year old DeBoyer, previously spent 12 years as the St. Clair County clerk before winning election to the 63rd House District in 2022.
He currently serves as the chair of the House Oversight Committee. Political analysts note that DeBoyer provides the ticket with crucial legislative and Capitol experience, complementing James, who has not served in the state legislature.
The choice sets the stage for a competitive general election on November 3, where James will face the Democratic nominee, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. Benson has not yet announced her running mate.
