COLDWATER, MI — The City of Coldwater has scheduled a special joint informational meeting between the City Council, the Planning Commission and the CBPU board on Monday, to address the zoning and regulation of high-utility data centers.
The session, which will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Henry L. Brown Municipal Building, will feature an expert from the Michigan State University Extension who specializes in land-use and zoning issues.
The meeting comes in response to recent social media rumors and public concern regarding potential data facilities.
Because the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act prevents local governments from issuing outright bans on these developments, City Manager Keith Baker says they are focusing on drafting strict permanent ordinances to dictate exact operational boundaries and preserve municipal resources.
The Planning Commission previously rejected a temporary freeze, noting that fast-tracking a definitive legal framework would protect neighborhoods from noise and utility strain without stalling broader economic growth.
City officials have emphasized that there are currently no active data center proposals for Coldwater, the informational session serves as a foundational step for gathering community feedback before final ordinances are drafted and adopted.
