COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan State Police and local law enforcement agencies officially launched the annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign today , expanding road patrols across the state to crack down on impaired drivers. through Labor Day on September 7.
The high-visibility enforcement initiative targets motorists operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, prescription medications, or other illegal drugs.

State traffic data underscores the urgency of the crackdown, between 2021 and 2025, Michigan recorded 46 driver fatalities during Labor Day holiday weekends, with 39.1% of those killed involving alcohol or drug impairment.
Vetter says they just want everyone to make it home
Administered by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, the statewide operation deploys dedicated federal traffic safety funds to put extra officers on the road alongside routine daily patrols. While it remains illegal in Michigan to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher, authorities emphasize that officers can make an arrest at any BAC level if a driver displays signs of impairment, such as lane weaving or varying speeds.
Officials urge the public to avoid life-altering consequences by coordinating a designated sober driver, utilizing a rideshare service, or arranging a safe alternative ride home before any late-summer celebrations begin.
