COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that a pavement repair project will begin next Monday, August 24, targeting the severely deteriorating concrete on US-12 at the I-69 interchange in Coldwater.
State contractor C&D Hughes, Inc. will lead the targeted repairs stretching from Michigan Avenue to Willowbrook Road.
If you travel that area MDOT says you should prepare for single-lane closures and subsequent traffic delays through the estimated completion date in early to mid October. According to state officials, the infrastructure fixes are being deployed as a temporary measure to smooth out major potholes and crumbling 1967-era concrete while keeping the road safe and functional.
While this project addresses immediate safety concerns, a permanent, long-term solution for the wider thoroughfare is slated for the future.
State Representative Jennifer Wortz said earlier this summer that MDOT is planning a comprehensive, full-scale reconstruction of US-12 for 2028, which will extend from the I-69 interchange all the way east to the railroad tracks just west of of Quincy.
That major multi-million dollar undertaking will involve stripping down the failing base material and completely rebuilding the entire stretch of highway.
Drivers can stay updated on real-time traffic impacts and ongoing scheduling adjustments through the MDOT Mi Drive Construction Map.
