MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – Eastbound Interstate 94 in Calhoun County was shut down for over 12 hours Tuesday following a double-fatal semi-truck crash.
According to the Michigan State Police Marshall Post, the incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, near 22 ½ Mile Road in Marengo Township.
Investigators say that two motorists had pulled their truck onto the shoulder of the highway and exited the vehicle to inspect a flat tire when an eastbound semi tractor-trailer struck them.
Both men, identified as a 51-year-old from Grabill, Indiana, and a 40-year-old from Aurora, Illinois, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision caused the commercial semi-truck to roll over, leaving the driver with only minor injuries.
Michigan State Police shut down the interstate at Exit 115, rerouting traffic onto local roads and forcing lengthy delays as crews cleared debris and reconstructed the scene.
MSP says that neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash.
