LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan State Police have officially launched a new online public database, designed to bring renewed awareness to the state’s cold cases.
Strategically timed with National Cold Case Month , the platform aims to generate fresh leads for unsolved homicides, missing persons, and serial offenses that have stalled over the decades.
While the state agency manages roughly 200 open cold cases at any given time, the newly minted Michigan Cold Cases Database debuted with an initial spotlight on 11 specific investigations approved by victims’ families.
Officials plan to systematically upload more cases as detectives organize decades of files
.The searchable database allows users to sort investigations by region, providing a narrative summary of what detectives believe occurred in each incident.
Michigan State Police Director Col. James F. Grady II says that the digital transition is a logical next step to build upon the success of their physical cold case units and university partnership programs.
By modernizing public outreach, authorities hope to capitalize on evolving personal relationships and heightened true-crime interest to secure crucial information.
Citizens who recognize details can submit anonymous tips or email evidence directly to investigators through the integrated portal.
