STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – An overnight multi-semi crash on the Indiana Toll Road in Steuben County blocked all eastbound lanes for nearly eight hours after a truck failed to slow down for a construction zone.
The incident occurred on Monday night at approximately 10:39 p.m. near mile marker 151.2, where traffic had slowed for maintenance on the Eastpoint Toll Plaza.
According to the preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Trooper Tyler Pinnington, a blue 2020 Volvo semi driven by 39-year-old Ruslan Piddaniuk, of Parma, Ohio, crashed into the stopped queue, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving three other commercial vehicles.
One of the semi-trucks burst into flames during the impact, though the driver managed to escape the cab safely.
Emergency responders managed the scene through the night, transporting two drivers to a local hospital for minor pain complaints, where they were treated and released.
Eastbound traffic was diverted off the Toll Road at Angola Exit 144 while specialized crews worked to clear the wreckage and debris, finally reopening the lanes at approximately 6:45 a.m.
The Indiana State Police coordinated the extensive cleanup and response with assistance from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Fremont Police Department, Fremont Fire and EMS, Indiana Toll Road Maintenance, and Bill’s Professional Towing and Repair.
