GIRARD TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police troopers from the Marshall Post are investigating a major copper wire theft that took place over the weekend at a gravel plant in Branch County’s Girard Township.
According to authorities, thieves targeted a work site operated by Carr Brothers & Sons Inc. on East County Line Road between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning.
The suspects managed to cut and remove approximately $30,000 worth of industrial copper wire from equipment located at the bottom of the gravel pit.
MSP investigators say that this incident is part of a broader, lucrative trend fueled by skyrocketing scrap metal values, with copper prices hitting historic highs near $6.60 per pound.
This theft follows another massive copper theft reported earlier this year in Coldwater, where nearly $100,000 in copper materials was stolen from American Copper and Brass on Michigan Avenue near Sauk Drive.
