COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater has officially altered its street construction policy after significant sewer defects were uncovered on a newly reconstructed roadway, forcing a fresh round of closures.
Contractors were forced to close Morse Street again this week, just after completion of a nearly $1 million reconstruction project—to repair two sanitary sewer issues and one storm sewer issue found beneath the fresh asphalt.
According to City Manager Keith Baker, the oversight is costing the city approximately $60,000 because the underground defects were not identified until after the project was finalized.
To prevent future taxpayer losses and avoid tearing up brand-new pavement, the city will now mandate post-construction, underground video inspections of all sewers prior to paving.
Baker said the video data utilized by crews during construction was outdated.
While the city is funding the primary three repairs, a fourth defect tied to a new storm inlet at the curb line is currently being corrected at the expense of the contractor, Reif-Reilly.
