STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – The City of Sturgis has announced it will terminate its contract with Flock Safety once the current agreement expires, citing severe budgetary constraints.
City officials confirmed the automated license plate readers, which were initially deployed to assist law enforcement in tracking stolen vehicles and locating missing persons, will be deactivated as the city restructures its fiscal priorities.
While the technology provided valuable data for the police department, the recurring subscription costs proved unsustainable for the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.
The City Commission emphasized that the decision was strictly financial and not a reflection of the technology’s effectiveness.
Facing rising operational costs across multiple municipal sectors, leaders opted to reallocate funds to maintain essential core services and staffing levels within the police force.
The department plans to transition back to traditional investigative methods once the cameras are removed.
