LANSING, MI — Republican gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Representative John James has called for an immediate suspension of Michigan’s state gas tax, framing the move as essential financial relief for drivers facing high costs at the pump.
In a video message posted to social media on Tuesday , James urged state Democratic leadership to declare a state of emergency to pause the state’s tax on gas
The proposal has drawn mixed reactions across the state, with critics pointing out the potential impact on infrastructure funding. Major infrastructure advocates warn that a tax suspension would blow a significant hole in the state budget and stall ongoing road repairs.
The plan also faces internal friction within James’s own party; Republican House Speaker Matt Hall initially questioned the fiscal reality of a gas tax holiday, though he later indicated he would put the measure up for a vote if the Democratic-controlled Senate advances it.
To compensate for the projected revenue loss, James’s campaign stated that he plans to eliminate government waste and redirect funds from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
