COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater’s latest downtown mural will be unveiled Friday afternoon just prior to Hoptober Fest.
Quincy artist Loren Reif has turned a section of South Monroe Street into a massive public asphalt canvas that Main Street Director Kristen Johnson says will be stunning to see.
Johnson says the mural has been covered to allow it to cure before it’s exposed to traffic and the elements.
The aquatic mural is designed to withstand standard vehicular traffic and beautify the downtown district for at least four years, remaining in place until the city’s scheduled resurfacing of South Monroe Street.
The project, which is the latest initiative backed by the Coldwater Downtown Development Authority, required closing the roadway between U.S. 12 and West Pearl Street to traffic. Reif’s mural features large-scale depictions of prominent local fish species such as northern pike and smallmouth bass.
Reif prepared the asphalt with deep crack filler and KILZ primer before applying premium outdoor exterior paint and a final weather-resistant seal.
