ANGOLA,IN (WTVB) – A confirmed case of measles has been reported in an adult resident of Steuben County, prompting local health officials and school districts to issue proactive advisories.
The Indiana Department of Health added Steuben County to its official tracking dashboard on Monday, making it the eighth county in northeast Indiana to document an infection this year.
While local health officials have not disclosed the patient’s specific location or source of exposure, the Steuben County Health Department emphasized that the highly contagious airborne virus can easily spread to unvaccinated or immunocompromised adults, not just children.
In response, the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County sent an advisory to families confirming there are currently no cases within school buildings, though strict state and local isolation guidelines remain ready if an outbreak occurs.
The single infection in Steuben County comes amidst a broader regional surge, bringing northeast Indiana’s total to 57 cases and pushing the statewide count to 104 confirmed cases this year.
Neighboring LaGrange County continue to lead the region with 26 confirmed case.
