COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater City Police say a motel on the east side of the city where they have responded to criminal complaints two dozen times so far this year was the scene of an attempted murder this past weekend.
Police report the crime occurred late Sunday in a room at the Coldwater Inn and Suites, the former Super 8 Motel at 600 Orleans Boulevard. According to officers, 35-year old Justin Weinberg, who listed the motel as his address, punched his 22-year old girlfriend in the head and then squeezed her neck until she passed out.
Police said the Coldwater woman didn’t report the crime until 2:00 p.m. Monday when, according to the victim, she was able to escape from the suspect’s room and call 911 to tell them about the incident.
Weinberg was arrested at the motel about 2 hours later and booked at the Branch County Jail. He was arraigned Tuesday in Branch County District Court on two counts, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and domestic violence.
Weinberg’s bond was set at $100,000 and he’s scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing July 3, 2018.
