Black Friday shoppers cross 34th street, in Herald Square, in New York

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB)- In the never-ending competition between retailers and consumers, both sides are becoming more sophisticated and better equipped to try to out-strategize and out-maneuver the other. The National Retail Federation is predicting a slight increase in Black Friday sales of about 4%, but they will have to work to get there according to Marcia LeRoy, an instructor in the WMU Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. She says shoppers have been hardened by hard times and that they work harder at saving money than ever before. And that of course spills over into the rest of the holiday shopping season. We haven’t seen any hard numbers yet, but anecdotally most managers say sales were up. The sales push today is being directed toward your local merchants. It’s called “ Small Business Saturday” and always happens annually the day after Black Friday.
