COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In girls varsity high school basketball game Tuesday night, Coldwater pulled out a 49-48 win at home over long-time rival Sturgis. The outcome in the non-conference matchup snapped the Lady Cardinal’s seven game losing streak. Coldwater’s one point margin of victory was provided by Haley Reincke who split a pair of free throws with 13.4 seconds remaining.
The Lady Cardinals started the night with a 12-4 lead after the opening period and then Sturgis won each of the next 3 quarters but it wasn’t enough in the end to prevent the loss for the Trojans. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater was Carlee Smoker, who had ten points, including a put back bucket on an offensive rebound to tie the score with 55 seconds remaining. Also for the Lady Cardinals, Michaela Gillette and Payton Watson had 9 points apiece with 9 rebounds and 7 assists for Gillette. Coldwater improved its record to 4-10. They return to action Friday night at home for a conference game against winless Parma Western, the only Interstate Eight team the Lady Cardinals have managed to beat this season.
There was a split in last night’s reserve games in Coldwater, which won the junior varsity game over Sturgis 49-20 with 12 points for Jamie Wellet and 11 for Hannah Parrish. The Trojans won the freshman game 42-20. Allison Adams had 10 points for Coldwater.
Also last night in girls basketball, Quincy lost 63-28 at Athens with 10 points and 7 rebounds for Katie Spalding. The defeat dropped their record to 1-13 and 1-7 in the Big Eight.
Bronson beat visiting Mendon 33-25 with 12 points for Alexa Ratkowski. The Lady Vikings improved to 5-0 in the BCS and 11-2 overall.
In boys basketball, Quincy stayed undefeated with a 58-31 win at Athens. Jake Rider had 20 points and 9 rebounds while Chase Cook added 11 points and 8 assists. The Orioles led 29 to 12 at the half and put the game away by taking the third quarter 16-4. Quincy is now 11-0 and 7-0 in the Big 8.
Also in the Big 8, Union City fell at Concord 56-43. The Chargers were ahead 31-29 heading into the fourth quarter when Concord exploded for 27 points in the final period to run away with the victory. Jalen Boes and Colin Kreger had 14 points apiece in the loss which dropped Union City’s record to 5-2 in the conference and 10-2 overall.
Union City also fell in the JV game 79-38 with 11 points for Devon Watson and 10 for Brandon Cross. And Tekonsha lost at home to Climax-Scotts 63-25.
Last night in wrestling, Quincy went 0-2 at Vandercook Lake, losing 51-12 to the host Jayhawks and 54-15 to Hanover-Horton. Kaileb Miller had two pins for Quincy and Jared Brown had a pair of victories while Joel Roush also had a win.
