COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Fire Department has had a busy start to the weekend and that goes as well for a handful of other Fire Departments in the Branch County area. Coldwater firefighters were called out around 5 pm Friday to a structure fire at 126 Walnut Street where moderate damage was reported to a one story residence which had an attached garage. No one was home at the time. Firemen were at the scene for nearly 2½ hours. No word yet on how the blaze got started.
Then early this morning, Coldwater was one of five departments that responded to a fire in Union Township where a barn and a home were leveled by flames. The fire could be seen from at least 4 miles away when the alarm was sounded at 1:40 a.m. and Union City was the first to respond to the location at 263 Creek Road. The barn was fully engulfed when the first fire truck arrived and the blaze had already quickly spread to the house, a double-wide modular, where everybody was able to get out safely. There were a number of horses and livestock that perished in the fire. Tanker trucks from Sherwood, Burlington, and Athens also brought water to the scene and the fire was finally declared out at 4:25 this morning. The Branch County Sheriff’s Department Victim Services Unit also was notified for assistance.
