QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in Boys basketball, Quincy cruised to a 63-18 win at home over Reading. Quinn Eifrid had 19 points, Nathan Karney added 11 points and 7 assists and Kalen Stahl had 11 rebounds. The Orioles improved to 1-1 in conference play and 2-2 overall.
Also in the Big 8, Union City fell in overtime at Concord 53-51. Elijah Way led the Chargers in defeat with 13 points while Seth Bruce had 9 points and 14 rebounds. The loss dropped Union City’s league record to 1-1 and 3-2 overall. Also last night, Tekonsha lost at Climax Scotts 70-36 with 8 points apiece for Calvin Blue and Connor Jenkins.
In girls basketball, Bronson lost 48-33 at Mendon. The game was tied at 29 at the end of the third quarter when the host Hornets outscored the Lady Vikings 19-4 in the final period. Kirin Cekander had 10 points in the defeat that left Bronson’s record at 1-1 in the BCS East and 4-2 overall.
In reserve basketball last night, in girls action, Coldwater swept a pair of games at Jackson Northwest, winning the JV game 52-38 while the freshmen got by the Mounties 31-30. The junior varsity victory was highlighted by a double-double for Samantha Rodesiler with 29 points and 10 rebounds along with 6 steals while Emilee Smoker had 14 rebounds. Leading the way for the freshmen were Valy Yaldo with 13 poionts and 9 rebounds and Kelsi Herlan with 10 points.
In a boys JV game, Union City lost to Concord 69-31 with 10 points for Blade Gordon.
Last night in boys swimming and diving, Coldwater’s first year program posted its first victory with an 84-68 win at Charlotte. Miguel Bauza led the Cardinals in scoring with 2 first place finishes in the 200 individual medley and 1 meter dive. Also freshman Mason Angel finished first in the 100 backstroke and 3rd in the 100 freestyle. Javier Perez also added a first in the 100 Breaststroke and a third place in the 50 freestyle. Dive captain Austin Butler finished 2nd in both the 1 meter dive and 50 free. Swim Captain Jace Arnold also posted a pair of second place finishes in the 200 free and the 100 free.
Relays were key to the win. The 200 medley relays finished first and second. Teaming up for the Relay A victory were Austin Krzeminski, Bauza, Perez, and Butler. The Relay B squad included Angel, Gabe Dimmer, Josh Rowlson, and Jeremy Hessenzahl. The Cardinals also took second and third in the 200 free relay and second in the 400 free relay. The boys are back in action next Thursday for their first home meet taking on Battle Creek Central starting at 6 p.m. at the Browne Aquatic Center.
Tonight’s high school schedule includes Varsity Boys and Girls basketball for Coldwater with the Cardinals at Jackson Northwest. We’ll have the Interstate Eight doubleheader on the radio with our live coverage beginning around 5:30 p.m. after the Evening Journal as the girls game tips off at 6 p.m. with the boys scheduled to follow at 7:30 p.m. Also tonight, in Boys only play, Bronson is at home against Mendon while on the Girls side, Quincy hosts Reading, Union City is at Concord and Tekonsha is at home against Climax Scotts.
