QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police have released updated condition reports on 3 people hospitalized following a multiple vehicle crash late Sunday night in northeast Branch County. Police also say they were given the wrong name for a pedestrian struck shortly after the accident occurred.
The man who was hit by one of the cars as he was attempting to lend assistance to the victims of the collision before troopers reached the scene is 54-year old Charles Odette. He lives on Clarendon Road in Butler Township right near the intersection of Herricksville Road where the accident happened.
Odette was flown from the crash site to Bronson Medical Center in Kalamazoo and is now listed in fair condition. Some people who had gathered at the intersection mistakenly told police the pedestrian hit was 68-year old Daniel Weaver, who owns a small convenience store on Clarendon Road. State Police learned of the name mix up when they called the hospital Monday to check on Weaver’s condition and were informed it was Odette who was actually taken by Air Care to the Medical Center.
26-year old Ryan Smith of Homer, the driver of a car that came upon the initial two vehicle collision and smashed into the wreckage, was released yesterday from Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
19-year old Trevor Johnson of Litchfield, who is accused of causing the original head on crash by driving across the centerline, was also discharged from Oaklawn on Monday.
Michigan State Police say charges against Johnson are pending as their investigation continues.
