COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Public hearings are scheduled for Tuesday’s City of Coldwater Planning Commission meeting concerning an amendment to a zoning ordinance regarding the manner in which accessory residential uses are permitted in the C-2 Central Business District.
The Coldwater Downtown Development Authority Board has given a positive recommendation to an ordinance that would amend planning and zoning codes for ground floor apartments in the downtown area that are not located on U.S. 12.
The Coldwater City Council will make the final decision on the ordinance. If they say yes, it would go into effect three weeks later.
The changes are needed so that a proposed four story apartment complex in the Milnes Plaza parking lot can move forward.
Developers are scheduled to present a preliminary site plan to the Planning Commission on Tuesday night. The proposed 41 unit apartment would be constructed in the Milnes Plaza behind the former Taylor’s Stationers store. Two members of the Coldwater Downtown Development Authority board raised parking concerns last week when they were presented with the preliminary site plan.
Also on a busy Planning Commission agenda will be a request from the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities for the reconstruction of a legally non-conforming parking lot at 168 Division Street. The CBPU has purchased the former Sauk River Trading Post building for the purpose of putting in office space for the Michigan South Central Power Agency and the utility’s technology center.
But it has led to strained feelings between the CBPU and the business next door D and M Auto. Members of the public told the Coldwater City Council last week that the CBPU has mistreated D and M in regards to a four foot easement.
