COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater Planning Commission dealt a damaging blow to plans for a proposed downtown 41 unit apartment complex Tuesday night.
The commission voted 7-0 to recommend to the Coldwater City Council that they not adopt an addition to the zoning ordinance which would allow multi family residential uses within the C-2 Central Business District. The City Council has the final decision on the addition to the ordinance.
They also decided 7-0 to table the preliminary site plan from Spire Development of Columbus, Ohio for “The Lofts at Milnes Plaza” to await action by the City Council on the ordinance the Planning Commission recommended not be adopted.
If the site plan is not adopted, the planned project would come to a halt due to an October 1, 2017 deadline for the developers to submit an application for tax credits to the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.
Spire Development has proposed a project which would include 41 apartment units. Seven of the units would be one bedroom apartments while the other 34 would have three bedrooms. Concerns have been raised about the location of the development, the loss of downtown parking spaces and the number of three bedroom apartments.
In other business, the Planning Commission voted 6-0 with one abstention to approve a request from the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities to reconstruct their half acre parking lot at 168 Division Street.
