LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has included Calhoun County as part of the ongoing Southeast Michigan Hepatitis A outbreak.
This follows updated surveillance and enhances coordination to prevent transmission of the serious and highly contagious liver disease.
No source for the outbreak has been found by health officials. They say the transmission appears to be through direct person to person spread and Illicit drug use.
Since last August, the outbreak has claimed 22 lives with 539 cases reported in southeast Michigan.
Health officials say the best way to help prevent getting Hepatitis A is to get a shot and practice good hygiene.
