QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – With the Village of Quincy’s K-9 officer accepting a position with the Coldwater Police Department, Quincy Village Manager Eric Zuzga says in his report for Tuesday night’s Village Council meeting that he and Police Chief Jeremy Burch have decided to retire the K-9 program in Quincy.
Officer Cody Longrey had been the handler of K-9 Orin for the last year-and-a-half. His last day with the Quincy Police Department will be on Monday.
Zuzga says ownership of the K-9 will be transferred to Longrey on the condition that if Quincy Police need assistance, he will provide it at no charge as long as the dog is certified.
The Village Council approved the K-9 program in May of 2016. Former Quincy Police Chief Scott Olney said at the time the K-9 would be funded through donations and a non-profit organization would provide the dog. Training was also made possible by a donation. It was estimated about $1,500 in donations would be needed each year.
Meanwhile, part time officers Kevin Kopacz and Anthony Estrada have been hired to fill the two open full time positions. Zuzga says they are considering adding one or two part timers to help fill in scheduling gaps.
