COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Fort Wayne man was formally charged Thursday during his arraignment in Branch County District Court with two counts in connection with a road rage incident and two alleged stabbings Wednesday afternoon in Coldwater.
22-year-old Javonta Lamont Tyson has been charged with assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
His bond has been set at $500,000. Tyson is scheduled to appear for a probable cause hearing on May 24 and a preliminary exam on May 31, 2018.
Coldwater Police say two men were stabbed after the road rage incident took place at U.S. 12 and Sprague when one of the vehicles involved was slow to pull away from a green light.
A 39-year-old was stabbed in the chest at 12 and Sprague while a 47-year-old was later stabbed in the leg at Michigan and Hull after the two vehicles involved in the road rage had gotten into a chase.
The two stabbing victims were treated at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
Tyson was a passenger in a SUV that was stopped by Branch County Sheriff’s deputies on M-86 east of Hodunk Road.
The woman driving the SUV was not detained. Police say there was a five year old child in the vehicle at the time.
District Court Judge Brent Weigle said during Thursday’s arraignment that the charges against Tyson were extremely serious crimes that “we don’t see very often in Branch County, Michigan.”
