COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County and southern Michigan are under a Heat Advisory through 8:00 p.m. and an Air Quality Alert today as a combination of soaring temperatures and high pollution levels create hazardous conditions across the entire area.
According to the National Weather Service, real-feel heat index values are expected to peak near 102 degrees due to a surge in humidity. Simultaneously, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) issued an Air Quality Alert for several southern and western counties.
Stagnant air and southern winds have accelerated the formation of ground-level ozone, pushing air pollution into the “moderate” to unhealthy range for sensitive groups. Also smoke from Canadian wild fires is expected to sink south into the Lower Michigan tonight into Thursday.
Health officials advise to stay indoors within air-conditioned environments, limit strenuous physical activity to the early morning, and drink plenty of fluids to avoid heat exhaustion., it’s also urging you check on vulnerable neighbors—particularly the elderly and those without home cooling systems—as high temperatures and poor air quality can rapidly aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.
