COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – As a system of expanded testing gets underway at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, the Michigan Department of Corrections reported on Thursday night a ninth prisoner at the facility has died from COVID-19.
The virus has now killed 28 Michigan prisoners.
The M.D.O.C. says 535 coronavirus tests have been administered at Lakeland which has resulted in 393 prisoners testing positive while another 142 tested negative.
At last report, 15 prisoners who previously tested positive are in a step down unit and are no longer considered contagious.
The latest report also shows that 31 staff members at Lakeland have tested positive for COVID-19.
According to the M.D.O.C., the plan is to test all prisoners at Lakeland by the end of the week and then begin testing prisoners at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility next week.
