COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Community School Superintendent Terry Ann Whelan told the district’s Board of Education on Monday night that the budgets passed last week by the board will have to be amended sometime in the future.
This after state lawmakers and Governor Whitmer agreed last week to cut funding to local school districts by $180 per student instead of the $650 per pupil figure that was estimated into the Coldwater school budget for the fiscal year that ended last Tuesday.
Major budget problems for the State of Michigan due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of revenue was reflected in the amended budgets for 2019-2020 and the budgets for 2020-2021 that were passed by the Board of Education last week.
With state funding cuts for 2019-2020 not being as bad as first thought, the district will actually close the year just under $168,000 in the black.
The 2020-2021 budget showed a reduction in state funding of $500 per student and Whelan said the deficit is expected to be over $1-point-1 million dollars.
But she pointed out nothing is final and to much is unknown at this time.
