CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WTVB) — Aerial treatment to combat the potentially deadly mosquito-borne Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) was scheduled to take place in three counties including Calhoun County on Tuesday night.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced that an area to the northeast of the I-94 and I-69 interchange was among the locations slated for treatment along with areas of Oakland and Livingston Counties.
Schedules are weather dependent and may change. More than 373,000 acres have been treated to date.
Chief medical executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun said in a statement “We urge residents to continue taking precautions against mosquito bites and encourage local officials in the affected counties to consider postponing, rescheduling or cancelling outdoor activities occurring at or after dusk until the first hard frost of the year.”
With that in mind, Harper Creek’s home football game with Jackson Northwest on Friday will start at 5:00 p.m..
Currently, a Barry County resident has been confirmed with EEE, in addition to 32 animals – 30 horses and two deer. Impacted counties are Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, Clare, Ionia, Isabella, Jackson, Kent, Livingston, Mecosta, Montcalm, Newaygo and Oakland.
This comes after Allegan County was sprayed for the mosquitoes Monday night.
