COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A 29-year-old Coldwater man who was originally arrested for shoplifting on Saturday morning escaped from a Coldwater police unit before being placed back into custody a short time later.
The shoplifting incident took place at about 10:30 a.m.. The suspect ran from the store but was apprehended by Coldwater Police a short time later.
But the suspect managed to force his way out of the back of the patrol unit while he was being taken to the Branch County Jail.
After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was captured near the Lakeland Correctional Facility by Coldwater Police.
They were assisted by the Michigan State Police and the Branch County Sheriff’s Department.
Coldwater Police say the suspect had warrants for tampering with an electronic device and for being a parole absconder. They add he was booked at the jail on charges of resisting and obstructing a police officer, escape, retail fraud and being in possession of drug paraphernalia.
No injuries were reported to the suspect or police officers.
