ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – Thursday’s strong winds hampered the efforts of nearly a dozen fire departments from northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio as a blaze northeast of Angola caused almost a half million dollars worth of damage.
The Angola Fire Department reports Steuben County Sheriff’s Deputy Rich McCarty spotted a large column of smoke in the area of 8730 East 15 North at about 12:00 noon while on routine patrol.
McCarty found a detached garage fully engulfed and the residence starting to catch fire when he arrived. He alerted the homeowner who was in the basement of the residence that the garage and home were on fire.
McCarty and the home owner worked to rescue several animals that were in pens in or around the garage.
They were able to save some of the animals but they were not able to get a dog and several cats out of the garage. When fire units arrived on the scene, they found the garage fully engulfed in fire and heavy fire inside the house.
It took crews almost 90 minutes to get the flames under control. The residence owned by William and Dolores Bredemeyer sustained heavy fire damage and the garage was a total loss. The was also a large woods and field fire that took place due to the garage fire.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
