QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – Due to the high number of COVID-19 cases in Branch County, Quincy School Superintendent Marc Kramer has announced that the district will remain with virtual learning through the holiday break and during the first week of back to school in January.
At this time, the district plans to resume face to face learning on January 11, 2021.
Kramer said he attended a virtual Emergency Operations Meeting for the county on Wednesday and talked with the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency.
It was pointed out during the meeting that Branch County is still experiencing a high rate of positive COVID-19 tests, much higher than back in August, September and October.
Branch County is also third in the state with the number of cases per million which means there is still a significant amount of COVID-19 out in the community and community spread is still at high numbers.
Kramer said, “With the Thanksgiving Holiday taking place last weekend, the health department is also concerned about more cases coming out in the next few days.” He added the decision to remain virtual came with support from the local Health Department.
He went on to say in a statement posted on the district’s Facebook page, “At our school we recognize that in person learning is the best approach for our students and it has been our goal to get students back in school face to face. Since we transitioned to the virtual platform, we have been monitoring the county data to determine when it might be best to return to in person learning. It was very much our hope that we could return for at least a little face to face time before the Holiday Break.”
The Quincy Community School District will be on Winter Break during the weeks of December 21 and 28. Classes will resume on January 4.
