COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Corrections says a prisoner who was originally housed at the Lakeland Correctional Facility died on Monday after testing positive for COVID-19.
It’s the first COVID-19 related death of a Lakeland prisoner that has been reported since May 30 and brings Lakeland’s death toll since the pandemic began up to 24.
Statistics provided by the Michigan D.O.C. show there have been 817 positive COVID-19 tests at Lakeland while 622 prisoners have tested negative.
Over 17,000 prisoners have tested positive for COVID-19 of the nearly 40,000 who were tested. Nearly 8,000 cases are still active.
The D.O.C. says 95 prisoners and three corrections officers have died after they tested positive for COVID-19.
Some relatives of Michigan prisoners as well as prisoner advocates have expressed their frustrations about the way the M.D.O.C. has handled the pandemic.
The Detroit Free Press reports that have planned a protest at the Harrison Correctional Facility in Adrian for Friday afternoon and a car caravan in Lansing on Saturday.
