BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – High school gymnasiums around Branch County will start to get busy this week as full activities for the winter contact sports of basketball, wrestling and competitive cheer get underway Monday following this week’s announcement by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The contests will be conducted with limited attendance and protocols in place in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Basketball games can start on Monday and according to their school district’s websites, the Quincy girls basketball team will play at Reading while the Union City girls will host Jonesville Monday night.
The first basketball games for Coldwater will take place on Tuesday night. Coldwater will take on Jackson Lumen Christi with the boys games at Lumen Christi and the girls games at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium in Coldwater.
Also on Tuesday, the Quincy and Union City boys open their seasons at Quincy while the Bronson girls will host Leslie. The Bronson boys play their season opener on Wednesday at Charlotte.
All of the Branch County wrestling teams will open their seasons next Saturday.
In competitive cheer, Bronson opens their season at the Portage Northern Invitational next Friday while Union City starts on February 15 at Springport.
Meanwhile, the Coldwater home gymnastics meet with Tecumseh that was scheduled for Saturday was cancelled due to inclement weather. No make up date has been announced.
