BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – A powerful winter storm that is part of a lot of bad weather across the country pounded Branch County with heavy snow and strong winds during the overnight hours which caused drifting and made roads nearly impassible on Tuesday morning.
Branch County Road Commission crews were out early Tuesday morning working on state and trunk lines with hopes of getting to the secondary roads later in the day.
At least eight inches of snow fell at many locations. It was hard to get accurate readings due to the strong winds which caused blowing and drifting snow.
The snow moved into Branch County during the 5:00 p.m. hour on Monday. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour were reported throughout the evening hours.
Other than the usual slide offs into ditches, no serious accidents have been reported by Branch County Central Dispatch.
A Winter Storm Warning expired at mid morning as the digging out began.
The big snow will be followed by the big chill. The coldest night of the winter is expected on Tuesday night as lows are forecast to bottom out at five degrees below zero.
The temperature in Coldwater has not been above freezing since February 4 but warmer temperatures are finally on the horizon as highs are expected to get into the 30s starting on Sunday.
