Joann Herman, 88, of Coldwater, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Maple Lawn. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 20, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Lockwood Community Church with Pastor Shayne Looper officiating. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home.
Joann was born November 4, 1932 in Coldwater, MI to James & Eolyn (Boone) Smullen. She married Leonard J. Herman on October 18, 1952 in Coldwater. He preceded her in death on December 5, 1980.
Mrs. Herman worked for several manufacturers including LA Darling, Essex, Theodore Bargman, Crotty Corp, RV Components and ADAPT retiring in 1994. She attended Lockwood Community Church and enjoyed playing BINGO, bowling on a league and playing softball and pitching for Kerr’s Kittens in the early 1950’s. Joann spent much of her time gardening, cooking and baking and loved spending time with her family up north in Cadillac where they would mushroom hunt. Joann enjoyed playing softball, kickball and badminton with her daughters and grandchildren.
Joann is survived by her children Sharon (Tom) Haylett, Leonce (Mark) Havens of Litchfield, Judy (Ken) Wendorf of Quincy, Julie West of Coldwater, her sisters Sally (Don) Pope of Coldwater, Jeanette Kubasiak of Coldwater, sister-in-law Rose Smullen, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 1 great, great granddaughter, many nieces and nephews and her beloved dog Bella. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers James (Sonny) Smullen, Harold Smullen, baby brother Joseph Smullen, her sisters Joyce Ernsberger, Eleanor Kaiser, grandson Jake Haylett, nephew JR Ernsberger and her beloved dog Missy.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Animal Aid of Branch County.
