CENTREVILLE, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson Vikings let a fourth quarter lead slip away but gathered themselves in overtime and defeated White Pigeon 57-54 on Tuesday night in the opening game of the Division Three Boys Basketball District Tournament at Centreville.
It was a close battle between the two old St. Joe Valley Conference rivals. White Pigeon led 29-28 at halftime but a 10-7 third quarter put Bronson ahead 38-36.
The Vikings built up a 47-40 lead and seemed to have things well in hand. But White Pigeon scored the last seven points of regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Chiefs led 52-49 but Bronson scored eight straight and held on during the final frantic seconds.
Mason Harris had the hot hand for Bronson with 19 points including five buckets from distance. Reagan Mayer had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds including 12 on the defensive boards. He also had three steals. Aden Hathaway added 10 points. The Vikings will take a 10-8 record into Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. district semifinal against Reading.
The second game in the Centreville Dog Pound also went into the overtime. The Union City Chargers scored the first eight points of the extra session as they knocked out Branch County rival Quincy 52-48. The Chargers scored the tying bucket with less than a minute to go in regulation and then got a defensive stop as the Orioles played for the final shot of the game. After Union City built a 50-42 lead in overtime, the Orioles fought back and scored six straight to cut the lead to two but the Chargers managed to hold on for the win.
Quincy was led by Kyler Economou’s 24 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Kyle Rodesiler added 18 points.
Quincy finishes with a record of 6-11. The Chargers will take a 6-11 record into Thursday’s 7:00 p.m. game against the host Centreville Bulldogs.
