COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced that the state will temporarily lift lane restrictions on nearly 60% of road and bridge projects to ease travel delays for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, , the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will suspend construction and remove orange barrels on 106 out of 179 ongoing projects statewide.
This temporary reprieve will remain in effect until 6 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2026, allowing smoother transit across major state corridors during a peak travel period.
The state’s proactive measures come as AAA estimates that more than 2.6 million Michiganders will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend.
While the rollback of active work zones will significantly decrease gridlock, MDOT officials caution drivers that certain traffic configurations, such as temporary lane shifts, concrete barriers, and shoulder closures, must remain in place for safety reasons.
Motorists are advised to minimize distractions, watch for remaining signage, and use the state’s online https://mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/map to check the status of specific routes before heading out.
