ANN ARBOR, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Now that April is here, it’s almost time for morel mushroom hunting season in Michigan.
President of the Michigan Mushroom Hunters Club, Lenny Tomaszewski says they will likely start popping up later this month and peak next month, if the weather cooperates.
“The whole month of May is excellent for morels in Michigan. And you can find morels pretty much anywhere in the state if you’re lucky, real lucky. But they’re everywhere.”
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says, like all wild mushrooms, morels require quite specific conditions of temperature and moisture to grow. Some springs are good for morels, others are poor. Warm and wet conditions are best, and cold and dry can mean almost total failure of the crop. March was much warmer than normal, but also quite dry. This could mean some mixed results for the 2021 hunt.
The morel is often sought due to their unique flavor and also because they also are very expensive to purchase and sometimes hard to find at stores.
