Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021, also at Lighthouse of Athens.
Matt was born April 4, 1960 in Coldwater, Michigan to Jack and Mary Ann (Klein) Doubleday. He grew up in Athens and graduated from Athens High School in 1978. On December 15, 1985, he married the former Karen Weirich at the First Congregational Church in Athens. She survives.
Matt belonged to the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 7 and was employed by Shouldice Brothers in Battle Creek doing sheet metal work. He was very mechanically-oriented, proud of the work he performed and well-liked by his co-workers. He retired in 2015 after 25 years with the company.
When not working, Matt enjoyed drag boats and drag racing, shooting, attending the Saturday Boy’s Club in Athens, smoking meat, barbecuing and watching the Food Network. He was very talented and liked doing things right. He had a clever sense of humor, loved making witty comments and picking on his siblings.
Matt was super proud of his kids and supported them in all their activities and dreams. He cherished his wife, spoiled his grandkids and was very attached to his pets. He would go out of his way to help anyone in need and was a big proponent of buying American-made wherever possible.
In addition to Karen, his wife of 35 years, Matt is survived by his children, Christof (Melanie) Doubleday and Whitney (Chris Crabtree) Doubleday, both of Battle Creek; his grandchildren, Callahan and MacKinley Doubleday; his stepfather, Donald (Timer) Doubleday of Athens; his siblings, Diana (Jim) Hayes of Ceresco, Gloria Wood of Union City, Thomas (Lori) Doubleday of Athens, Robert (Maureen) Doubleday of Battle Creek and Marc (Nancy) Doubleday of Gurney, IL; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Doubleday; and a brother-in-law, Ted Wood.
