Virgil Wesley Hanson, 88, of Union City, passed away Monday, April 19, 2021 at his daughter’s home in Otsego, Michigan.
A celebration of Virgil’s life will take place at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2021 at Burlington Church of God with Pastor David Rails officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Union City. Visitation will take place from 11:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m., also at the church.
The family is being served by Lighthouse Funeral and Cremation in Union City.
Virgil was born on December 2, 1932 to Cecil and Lillian (Velliquette) Hanson in Orangeville Township, Michigan. He graduated from Union City High School with the Class of 1950 and went on to earn an associate degree in Industrial Management from Kellogg Community College.
On November 3, 1951 Virgil married his sweetheart, Betty Weller, in Burlington; they shared 68 years together. Virgil worked at Clark Equipment in Battle Creek for 38 years, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Burlington Church of God, where he volunteered often. Virgil enjoyed playing cards, chess and helping family

Virgil and Betty shared a very adventurous life together visiting 49 out of 50 states. They raised three children, camped and traveled with family and grandchildren. Their travels also included many cruise trips to the Caribbean and their favorite cruise to Alaska. They enjoyed being snowbirds in Zephyrhills, FL with old friends and making new ones.
Virgil is survived by his children: Suzanne (Stephen) Soncrant of Belleville, Virginia “Jenny” Avery of Otsego and Michael W. Hanson of Union City; 10 grandchildren: Lori (Kurt) Schlichting, Christy (Ed) Damon, Josiah Soncrant, Jonathan Soncrant, Holly (Don) Ash, Ryan (Rebekah) Rarick, Andrew Rarick, Micheala (Joe) Ray, Danielle (Nate) Nichols and Michael B. Hanson; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great granddaughters; brothers, Michael Neal Hanson of Sherwood, Norman Hanson of Columbus, OH and Alan Hanson of Union City; a sister, Karen Jahnke of Ypsilanti; and his good friend and chess rival, Tim (Heidi) Hehr.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; and brothers: Larry, Phil and Milton “Jim” Hanson.
