COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A home on Coldwater’s north side was destroyed in an early Saturday morning fire but everyone inside managed to get out safely.
Coldwater Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz says the blaze at 129 Hayton which is at the corner of Morse Street was reported at 3:06 a.m.. Heavy fire was coming from the garage and the front of the two story structure owned by Heather Russell when the first crews arrived.
Schmaltz says five persons inside got out after they were awakened by smoke alarms. No injuries were reported but the home sustained significant damage and was considered a total loss. Damages were in the garage and the west side of the home. They were estimated at $275,000.
The intensity of the flames initially forced a defensive attack by firefighters. It took them nearly an hour to get the fire under control.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Three vehicles parked in the driveway were also destroyed.
Quincy firefighters were called in on automatic mutual aid. Life Care Ambulance, Coldwater Police and Michigan State Police also assisted.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Victims Services Unit as well as the American Red Cross are assisting the displaced residents of the home.
The last of the fire crews cleared the scene 7:44 a.m..
