COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It was 25 years ago Monday that Coldwater native Scott Brayton lost his life in a crash during practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
After winning his second straight pole for the 1996 Indianapolis 500, the 37-year-old Brayton was making a practice run in a backup car on May 17, 1996 when the right rear tire deflated, causing the car to go into a spin.
It collided with the outside retaining wall in turn two on the drivers side.
Nearly four hours after the crash, Indianapolis Motor Speedway P.R. Director Bob Walters made the official announcement.
Nearly 1,000 persons attended his funeral at the United Methodist Church. Many drivers and personalities from auto racing attended. Storefronts along U.S. 12 displayed checkered flags and green ribbons were worn in honor of a fallen local hero.
