BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – Drivers on the east side of Bronson had to be detoured off of U.S. 12 for about an hour Friday morning after a sleepy pickup truck driver crashed his vehicle into a utility pole and knocked down live Consumers Energy wires into the street.
The crash in the area of 544 East Chicago happened at about 8:10 a.m..
Bronson Police Chief Stephen Johnson says according to their investigation, the driver fell asleep, veered off the road and struck the utility pole causing some power outages in the area. The driver was not injured but the pickup sustained heavy front damage. Both air bags deployed in the vehicle.
Johnson says the pole had to be replaced as it was sheared off at the ground.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department assisted Bronson Police with traffic control while U.S. 12 was shut down.
Sparking power lines in the street forced authorities to close U.S. 12 between Matteson and Wayne Streets.
Consumers Energy crews were quickly able to make repairs and U.S. 12 was reopened at about 9:25 a.m..
