COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – New tasers and accessories for Coldwater Police Department officers were approved by the Coldwater City Council on Monday night.
Coldwater Police first bought tasers in 2003. Public Safety Director Joe Scheid told the Council on Monday night that he and Deputy Chief Patrick Beeman strongly believe that over the past 18 years the tasers have performed exactly as advertised but they have reached an end-of-life scenario.
He said the batteries are no longer maintaining their charge during 12-hour shifts.
In making his request for the new tasers, Scheid said they recently had a unit malfunction and later learned that the unit could not be repaired.
He said the purchase of the new Taser 7 product from Axon Enterprise of Scottsdale, Arizona will give them the best conducted energy weapon currently available on the market.
A quote of just under $24,000 from Axon was approved in a resolution passed by the Council. The payments would be spread out over five years.
